Deputy Director of Public Works

Performs difficult technical and responsible administrative work overseeing the installation, repair and maintenance of streets, storm water, water treatment/distribution and wastewater treatment/collection, fleet maintenance; does related work as required.  Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works.  Supervision may be exercised over Public Works personnel, with direct supervision over water and sewer personnel.  Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and equipment used in water and wastewater system repair, installation and street and storm water maintenance; comprehensive knowledge of civil engineering principles as applied to the development and construction of water and wastewater systems; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and necessary safety precautions; ability to plan and supervise diverse construction and maintenance projects and specifically the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers.  Assists in planning, organizing, directing, controlling and evaluating all Public Works activities and operations; plans and establishes programs for system improvement; visits job sites and oversees major emergency operations; consults with the department director and advises as to status of maintenance and repair activities. Graduation from college with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering preferred with 5-7 years of experience in the construction, repair and maintenance of streets, storm water, including considerable experience in a supervisory capacity.   Possession of valid NC driver’s license, required, Surface Water Treatment Grade A, Wastewater Treatment Grade IV, and Engineering Intern (EI) status preferred.  Salary DOE.  Position open until filled.
